Annual Performance Report : March  2001 and March  2002

The Society for Protection of Handicapped Children and Youth (SPHCY) is a non–governmental,  not-for-profit organization, established in 1999 with the objective of offering timely rehabilitation  services to handicapped children and youth from birth to age 16.
The mission of this organization is to amend the public perception of people with disabilities   promoting public’s awareness of their capabilities not their limitations. In order to fulfill its  three fundamental goals; equal opportunities, rehabilitation services and self-reliance for people with disabilities. SPHCY offers specialized free vocational,  speech and physiotherapy services.
SPHCY work with the handicapped has found that reducing the severity of secondary injuries  and prevention of social,  psychological and economic disabilities is vital.

Considering the cost of rehabilitation services, the fulfillment of such an aim demands free  services to the children with somatic and mobility difficulties. It is worth mentioning that these  services are offered with no regard to gender,  nationality and race, religion or social and  economic status.

The following activities were carried out by SPHCY in March 2001-March 2002:

A: Expert  services: 

  1. 3600  hours of free occupational therapy

  2. 2000 hours of free speech therapy

  3. 1400 hours of free physiotherapy

B: Educational services:

  1. Ten  family sessions: Empowering the family members of the children with disabilities through discussion of the following six topics:

  2. Nutrition of children with disabilities

  3. Bringing up the children with disabilities,  emphasizing their specific  needs

  4. Means of reducing psychological stress and confronting the difficulties  in  the  family

  5. Correct approaches on reducing the difficulties of the children with disabilities  related to family relationships

  6. Counseling services and strategies for the single-child families (handicapped) who plan on having more children

  7. Empowering the parents with futuristic viewpoints 

  8. Familiarizing the families with their civil and social rights and changing the perceptions of schools,  society and families towards children  with  disabilities

C: Supportive  Services:  

In order to familiarize society and beneficiary people with the aims and performances of  this  organization and also to disseminate and expand its objectives and viewpoints to attract people’s support,  a painting exhibition and a music concert were conducted:

  1. Painting exhibition at the Society’s venue:  1st-6th October 2001;
    This exhibition was conducted with the help and endeavor of a group of prominent Iranian artists and the earnings were donated to the children with disabilities.

  2. Piano recital:  21st and 22nd February 2002  by Ms. Delbar Hakim Ava

  3. Continuation of the mobile library by which volunteers visit patients in the hospitals, read books to them and donate books to them before leaving the hospital.   This is done on a regular basis in order to give the parents of the individuals with disabilities a break from looking after their children

  4. Establishing game therapy to treat the learning disorders of the children with disabilities

  5. Establishment of art therapy for disabled children

  6. Use of  hydro therapy to expedite cures

  7. Services to Afghan and Iraqi children with disabilities

D: Lateral  activation:

  1. Direct cooperation with the Special Education Organization of the Education Ministry

  2. Direct cooperation with Welfare Sciences and Medical Sciences  universities by  accepting interns  in occupational, speed and physiotherapy

  3. Holding consultancy workshop “Explaining the place of civil institutions” in August  2002 and to consider the necessity of a local and national NGO network.  This workshop  was conducted with the cooperation of The Society for Protection and Assistance of Socially  Disadvantaged Individuals (SPASDI)

  4. Participation in live television interview to introduce objectives,  activities and services of  the organization

  5. Participation in all related ceremonies of the organization
